1. General information
This is an elective. It is framed within the field of scientific English for biomedical subjects, encouraging students to be competent and able to communicate effectively in English. Different aspects of the English language indispensable for the production of texts specialized in the field of occupational therapy are worked on at linguistic, textual and communicative level. The starting level will be B1 working towards B2.
The use of English is fundamental since it is currently the main language of scientific communication, which makes its use in different professional contexts essential.
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, the students shall demonstrate they has acquired the following results:
1. Express coherently and appropriately different communicative situations in an international written context.
2. Be able to interpret, evaluate, justify, contrast and synthesize the information received in written form.
3. Be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the vocabulary necessary to understand and produce specific texts.
4. Develop English language writing skills from sentence structure to paragraph and final text.
5. Adapt the tone and style of the written document depending on the recipient and the communication objective.
6. Develop original written texts in different writing genres applicable to physical therapy studies, such as writing letters and emails with professional content, resumes, summaries, reports, and scientific articles.
3. Syllabus
1- The language of Occupational Therapy.
2.- Introduction to Written Academic Language.
3.- How to write an abstract.
4.- How to write a Research Article and a Case Study.
5.-Correspondence and emailing in the academy.
6.- How to introduce oneself in written form in the academia: bionotes and CVs.
7. How to prepare Conference proposals and participation.
4. Academic activities
Lectures: sessions with the teacher in which the subject syllabus will be explained. 40 hours
Problems and cases: practical sessions, resolution of activities proposed by the teacher: 10 hours Subject study; class preparation: 70 hours
Assessment tests. 5 hours
5. Assessment system
1) There will be a final written exam in which the students will have to demonstrate the acquired knowledge, their ability to understand and write in English, the use of specific vocabulary, the knowledge of the appropriate structure for writing any of the genres worked on during the term.
The exam will have a maximum duration of 2 hours and the following sections will be assessed: Correct use and knowledge of the different sections of the genres worked on. The ability to use a specialized vocabulary and to deduce the meaning of various terms. Knowledge of the functions of the biosanitary language (instructions, definitions, descriptions, etc.) The ability to write an academic text applying all the items worked throughout the term..
This test will account for 70% of the final grade. The theoretical exam must be passed in order to be able to make the average with the rest of the grades.
2) In the classroom work section, various tasks and activities will be carried out. Work will be done in pairs, individually or in small groups. The teacher will review the activities and provide guidance to the students. Exercises and activities performed in the class or as homework, will be evaluated and will account for 30% of the total grade.
